Tobey chicago grandfather clock

Not sure when they stopped making this style of movement, but if i had to date the clock, I'd say no later than teens, although the same style of dial appears on their hall clocks of the s. It will be a little while until i take possession of it, since I'll be driving to Chicago to pick it up, but will certainly post pictures after I do.

Hopefully there is a mark somewhere on the case as to manufacturer. Richard T. Deceased Deceased. Apr 7, 5, 8 0 Country Region. It's really interesting for me to research and learn about the different styles and the relationship of mission style within the larger arts and crafts movement.

This design does show the through tenon construction, but is not as severe as the open well "mission" clocks by Gilbert and Sessions. Love learning, just like when we got a sideboard and I was mistakenly calling it Sheraton until I did some reading and learned it was Hepplewhite! Willie X Registered User. Feb 9, 15, 1, This clock could have been produced by one of the big jewelry concerns, when mission was in vogue.

If so, it will likely have some marking, tag, emblem, somewhere. Willie X. Very handsome clock. I wish it were in my living room so I could over it with a fine tooth comb, I keep wanting to take a "quick" day trip to Chicago to pick it up, but it's going to be more of a production.

I found another Tobey clock that used a Seth Thomas movement, with very similar upper door knob and hinge placements. On a hunch, did a Google book search and found an ad from listing my clock! Overjoyed I found it! Gustav's brother Leopold stepped in and finished his brother's contract and went on to design pieces in the Russmore line. Last edited: Oct 16, Stickley clock that is pretty similar to the Russmore clock, this one having "applied" tenons and keys. It is fumed birch as mentioned in this blurb from a House Beautiful magazine under the heading "Novelties in House Furnishing.

Circa hall clock made by the Tobey Furniture company as part of their Russmore line. The case was made by L. Stickley in his Onondaga Shops. The movement is a Seth Thomas, 72a I think?

Nice sturdy movement bracket. It's missing one of the movement screws I'll have to take off the hands since the strike count is off. I'll also take off the face and post some pictures of the front of the movement. Original clamshell pulleys.

The pendulum "crutch" really isn't a crutch, just a wire that goes through a wear plate in the pendulum stick.

I posted a quick video of it running and striking, and I'll post better pictures later. Jan 22, 5, 83 Country. They also used Waltham movments. The movements were equal to the Elliot's in quality. That is why I wondered if Tobey Chicago mixed and matched parts.

Although I cannot find a Waltham with Westminster on gongs, the face looks more like a Waltham. I have attached a Waltham face and an Elliott face for comparison. If it's a Waltham, it almost surely be marked.. Andy Dervan Gibbs Literary Award. Oct 23, 2, 63 Country Region. Hello chimeclockfan, After Walter Durfee's chime tube patent was broken in Many companies jumped into the market selling these clocks. Waltham made their own movements, Herschede probably made their own, everyone else probably purchased them from Elliot or one or two others companies.

I am unsure where the dials came from, but I suspect that they probably came from England and each company wanted their logo on them. There is a Bulletin article referencing Toby and these clocks: No. Andy Dervan. The dial on this clock is marked 'Tobey, Chicago'. What I wanted to know is if Tobey Chicago tended to mix and match parts Elliott mechanism, Waltham face , or if Elliott themselves made a dial with the star section on the moon dial support like Waltham's.

The clock is not marked 'Waltham' with the one thing advising it would be a Waltham face is the star on the moon dial section. It is not marked Elliott as well.

The one thing that suggests it is an Elliott mechanism is the fact it chimes on 4 coiled gongs not tubes , and strikes the hour on a fifth coil gong. I have also found a Tobey Chicago clock with an Elite Germany mechanism, but this chimes on tubes.

The dial also looks different on this as well. Last edited: Feb 2, I didn't know Winterhalder made longcase mechanisms with 5 coil gongs. I am now inclined to think this clock uses a Waltham dial with the star on the moon dial support, but another company's mechanism and components.

Dial maker could make a standard dial and either put company logo on or have it added later. Waltham advertised 5 Brass dial grades varying prices. Thanks for the information. Regardless of who exactly made this clock's components, it is a very nice clock. The coil gongs are one of the best chimes I've heard in a longcase clock. Feb 29, 9 0 1. I believe this is a similar marriage of Elliott, Waltham from Tobey Thanks for the photos.

Your clock's case differs from others that I've seen. All signed Walthams I know of were arranged like this. This decorative example features a carved oak case and stands a full 8 feet 4 inches tall. This case rests on four compressed ball or bun feet.

The base features a carved panel that is inset and trimmed with a large molding. This panel features a medieval scene where there are three gentlemen playing a game around an table in the town square. It is interesting to note that I have seen at least two other scenes depicted in this area that share a similar case format.

The most common of these seems to be a tavern scene. The waist section is long and is pinched in from the waist and bonnet. Full length columns flank the sides of the case and terminate with carved lion heads.

The waist door is a rectangular shape and is fitted with heavy beveled glass. The glass enables one to view the motion of the brass faced pendulum bob and the brass cased weights. Additional carved details including swags and florals decorate this waist area. The bonnet is the most heavily carved section of this case. The arched pediment is fitted with a carved facade that features three bearded men.
